The International Biennale of Casablanca is pleased to announce the names of the artists added to the list of participants of its 5th edition that will take place from 24 September to 1 November 2020:
Yassine Alaoui Ismaili aka Yoriyas (Morocco), Rushdi Anwar (Kurdistan-Iraq / Australia), L'Atelier de l'Observatoire (Morocco), Tania Bruguera (Cuba), Mounir Fatmi (Morocco / France), Yasmine Hajji (Morocco / France), Lubaina Himid (Zanzibar / United Kingdom) in collaboration with Magda Stawarska-Beavan (Poland / United Kingdom), Fatima Mazmouz (Morocco / France), Gideon Mendel (South Africa / United Kingdom) and The Otolith Group (India / Ghana / United Kingdom).
This selection is the outcome of an international research, and dialogues developed between the artistic director Christine Eyene and artists whose works will include, in part, new commissions and participatory projects resulting from residences and workshops held between Essaouira and Casablanca.
The 5th International Biennale of Casablanca is entitled The Words Create Images, a theme inspired by the thinking of South African photographer George Hallett on the link between literature and image-making processes. It also refers to an observation by Algerian-born French philosopher Jacques Derrida in his seminar Trace and archive, image and art (2002), on the idea of words acting as images beyond their discursive properties.
Moving ahead with the new orientations initiated by the artistic direction, in January 2020 the biennale will announce the new members of its team, the events of the incubation programme developed at the BIC Project Space (Casablanca), as well as some of its new partners.
